Two Families Strike Back After Being Hit with Violence

Victim:
• Kehndra Isakson was only 19-years old when she was shot and killed by gang members while at a house party on September 29, 2001. Kehndra left behind an 18-month old daughter, Angel.

Offender:
• Garritt Anderson was arrested on September 11, 2001 for child abuse homicide and was sent to prison for up to 30 years. He was 24-years old at the time and was raising two children as a single-father. High stress levels contributed to his reactions to a crying infant.

Kehndra and Garritt were cousins. Garritt’s mother, Rebecca Ibarra, and Kehndra’s father, Ken Isakson Jr., are sister and brother.

The two of them have teamed up to share their personal stories to anyone who will listen. They have a strong message about how violence has affected their lives, both as a member of the victim’s family as well as a member of the offender’s family. Together they promote Anti-Violence by publicly asking that everyone do their part to help stop the violence. They have put together a presentation that they’d like to share with everyone, especially the youth.

The two families have presented their “Anti-Violence” presentation together at numerous public schools, Christian schools and Youth Correctional Facilities. Their goal is to impact the youth in a way that they will want to get involved and help stop the violence in the world today. They hope that kids will become more aware of their surroundings, report suspicious situations and recognize and identify their stress levels as well as learn how to monitor them regularly.

Throughout the presentation, the nationally recognized Community of Caring values are also mentioned and addressed. Rebecca Ibarra is the Community of Caring Lead Teacher at Matheson Jr. High and hopes to instill the core values of Respect, Responsibility, Family, Caring and Trust into the young lives of the people in the audience.

The following pages provide an outline of the Anti-Violence presentation that Rebecca, Kenny and Cindy are promoting. The presentation lasts one hour and if time is allowed, the speakers will stay to answer any questions from the audience. There is no cost for the presentation but donations to help purchase an LCD projector are gratefully accepted.

Please contact Rebecca Ibarra by email at rebecca.ibarra@granite.k12.ut.us if you’re interested in scheduling a presentation for your organization.
